Nita Farahany

Nita Farahany is the Robinson O. Everett Distinguished Professor of Law & Philosophyand Founding Director of the Duke Initiative for Science & Society. A widely published scholar on law and ethics of emerging technologies, she recently authored the critically acclaimed book, The Battle for Your Brain: Defending the Right to Think Freely in the Age of Neurotechnology. She is a frequent commentator for national media and frequent speaker including at TED, Aspen Ideas Festival, the World Economic Forum (WEF), and judicial conferences worldwide, elected member of the American Law Institute, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, past President of the International Neuroethics Society, ELSI advisor to the NIH Brain Initiative, member of the Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders, and co-chair of the Global Futures Council for Neurotechnology for the WEF. She is the Chair and a Commissioner of the Study Committee on Mental Privacy, Neural and Cognitive Biometric Data for the Uniform Law Commission (ULC), and co-reporter for the ALI-ELI Joint Principles of Biometrics project. From 2010-2017, she was a Commissioner on the U.S. Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. Farahany is a co-editor-in-chief of Journal of Law and the Biosciences.
